Two rare Lipsius works in one volume: Iusti Lipsi de re militia romana (1630) and Iusti Lipsi poliorceticon sive de machinis, tormentis, telis (1625), in Latin, illustrated bound edition by Ex Officina Plantiniana, 600 pages, 23 × 18.5 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Two very rare works by Justus Lipsius in one volume
“Iusti Lipsi de re militia romana” 1630.
“Iusti Lipsi poliorceticon sive de machinis, tormentis, telis” 1625.
The first work deals with ancient Roman military organization, tactics, and warfare.
The second work covers Roman siegecraft as well as military equipment, in particular siege engines, artillery, and weapons.
Both works are richly illustrated; the first work has a folded copper plate, 3 full-page copper engravings (of 4, one is only partially present), 8 smaller copper engravings, as well as a few smaller woodcuts.
The second work contains a total of 38 copper engravings, of which 25 are full-page.
The binding is somewhat rubbed. The spine and edges show some loss of material, partly with light restoration traces. With gold stamping and gilded heraldic superlibros.
In addition, with gold-edged pages, which are only very lightly faded.
Most pages are in good condition, with pervasive light browning. There are, in places, stains in the lower corner area as well as some scattered spots at times.
At the beginning, very small worm tracks in the inner and outer margins, with some slight loss of signal.
Pages 149–172 show small to medium-sized worm tracks in the text area.
The last pages show small worm tracks in the lower corner area, outside the text.
The title page of the first work has been rebound.
In the first work, the middle portion and the lower corner in the inner margin area of pages 193/194 are missing, with image and text loss.
Pages 195–198 are creased and show some cracks in the inner area.
Pages 199–208 are still bound, but only fragmentarily preserved. Of pages 199–202 only a small corner remains each; of pages 203–208 roughly the upper third is present.
Thus, one full-page copper plate is missing.
Collation: 397 pages, 3 leaves, 219 pages, 3 leaves
Dimensions: 23 x 18 cm
