Tabernaemontanus’s Neuw vollkommentlich Kreuterbuch, a large-format 1625 illustrated herbarium bound in contemporaneous blind-stamped pigskin, 1300 pages, 38.5 x 26 cm, featuring about 3000 plant woodcuts across three parts.
Description from the seller
“New, perfectly complete Herbal Book/ with beautiful and artificial figures” Jacob Theodor Tabernaemontani 1625.
Large-format herbal book with all 3 parts and about 3000 beautiful wood engravings of plants.
Bound in a contemporaneous blind-stamped pigskin leather binding. This is somewhat worn. The front cover has a few stains and the hinges are cracked and have been lightly repaired.
The pages are generally well preserved, uniformly browned, and with occasional light stains. Pages 219–245 show a few brown spots in the inner area. The last three leaves of the index at the end are slightly creased and have some restorations and additions.
The first numbered leaf and the title woodcut of the second part bear an unsightly ownership inscription.
The first six leaves including the title and the last four leaves of the index are missing. The title page of the second part was bound in at the beginning as a facsimile.
Some woodcuts are colored, a few of them partly with white.
The index after the first part as well as the index after the second and third part contains some handwritten markings and handwritten additions.
Collation: 1 (of 6) leaf, 642 pages, 28 leaves, 1 blank leaf, 4 leaves, 598 pages, 1 blank leaf, 202 pages, 20 (of 24) leaves
Dimensions: 38.5 x 26 cm
