Château Mouton Rothschild, in the Pauillac appellation, is a Premier Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc, along with its counterparts Margaux, Haut-Brion, Latour, and Lafite.
This wine is a true symbol of the Bordeaux wine region. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac at auction and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild, which was then classified in 1855 as a Second Growth. After Nathaniel de Rothschild's death in 1870, the Château remained in the Rothschild family, with little development until 1922. Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Baron Nathaniel's great-grandson) took control of the estate. In 1924, he mandated that this great wine be bottled at the Château, which until then had been delivered in oak barrels to wine merchants (a first in Bordeaux).
