Franz Balthazar von Lindern (1682-1755), a native of Bouxwiller, was director of the Botanical Garden in Strasbourg and researched the flora of Alsace.
In 1728 he published a first flora of Alsace .
He had divided the 920 plant species found in the area of Strasbourg, Barr, Mutzig and Bouxwiller according to the system of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort hence name of this book -"Tournefortius Alsaticus".
The book contains the species classified according to the flowering season from January to December. Synonyms and vernacular nouns in French and German appear in the descriptions.
This work is a regional botanical field guide dedicated to the flora growing spontaneously along both sides of the Rhine River (cis & trans Rhenum), focusing primarily around the region of Strasbourg (Argentoratum).
Franz Balthazar von Lindern had his name immortalised by the botanist Allioni who dedicated the genus Lindernia to him, following his discovery in 1725 near Strasbourg of the Pyxidaria (current valid name: Lindernia procumbens) mentioned for the first time in the "Tournefortius alsaticus".
Franz Balthasar von Lindern (1682–1755) was a Franco-German physician and botanist from Strasbourg. He directed the Strasbourg botanical garden and wrote [Hortus Alsaticus], a key 18th-century work on the plants of Alsace. The plant genus [Lindernia] is named in his honor.
