Large polychrome papier‑mâché octagonal box from the early 20th century, India (Kashmir region), 19 × 17 × 17 cm, with floral motifs, varnished, in good used condition with minor wear.
Description from the seller
Polychrome covered box with floral decoration
Early 20th century
India, Kashmir region
Polychrome papier-mâché and lacquer
Dimensions: 19 × 17 × 17 cm
Large octagonal covered box, made of polychrome papier-mâché and lacquer. The body is segmented by rectangular panels outlined in red and black, each adorned with a stylized floral motif painted in red, white and green on a yellow ground animated by a dense vegetal pattern.
The domed lid, particularly elaborate, is molded in several superimposed and fluted registers evoking the unfurled petals of a lotus. Its summit is occupied by a large relief floral composition, arranged around a central button. The red-orange borders highlighting the different levels enhance the architectural effect and the sculptural character of the piece.
The technique of painted and lacquered papier-mâché as well as the floral repertoire allow this piece to be aligned with productions from northern India, probably Kashmir, a region especially renowned in the 19th century for papier-mâché objects richly decorated. This box, however, is distinguished by its strongly pronounced relief and by a deliberately expressive execution.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Some wear and rubbing of the polychromy and of the lacquer, with chips, gaps and occasional losses. Interior showing signs of use. Complete with its lid and preserving a substantial portion of its original polychrome decoration.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
Shipped with UPS and insurance
