Description from the seller
Gaston LAMOUREUX (1900-1974) - Still life with soup tureen and bottle - Watercolor and gouache (1941)
Description:
Very beautiful and elegant original watercolor with touches of gouache on paper, created by the French artist listed as Gaston Lamoureux (1900-1974). The work is from 1941, in the midst of the artist's mature period.
The composition is refined, organized around everyday objects of the era. On the left, a large covered earthenware tureen with floral decoration and handles, topped by a matching jug or pitcher. In the center, a dark glass bottle (reminiscent of a liqueur or spirits flask) adorned with a red wax seal brings a dark, elegant contrast note. On the right, a low basket holds a few fruits (apples or peaches). The whole rests on a table draped with a cloth or fabric featuring rich vertical stripe patterns in blues, ochers, and grays.
The artist demonstrates excellent technical mastery, blending the transparency of watercolor with the light opacity of gouache to render the brilliance of the ceramic glaze, the texture of the glass, and the reflections of the fabric. The underlying line drawing provides a superb geometric structure to this interior scene.
