Description from the seller
Barthélemy FERDINAND (Active in the early 20th century)
- Large still life with apples and onions - Oil on canvas
Description:
Beautiful and luminous oil painting on canvas depicting a kitchen still life, characteristic of the early 20th century.
The composition is arranged with balance around a large wicker basket overflowing with onions with coppery highlights. In the center, a white plate holds a mound of apples with green and yellow hues, harmoniously echoed by a traditional terracotta jug placed in the background.
The whole rests on a plinth covered by a tablecloth in subtle turquoise blue and pale green tones, completed on the right by a textured white linen.
The work is distinguished by a generous painterly touch and vibrant blocks of color that give a very beautiful relief to this everyday scene.
About the artist:
Barthélémy FERDINAND is a painter of landscapes, still lifes and French genre scenes active in the early 20th century. A pupil of the famous landscape painter Jean-Charles Cazin, his style is part of the post-impressionist lineage, favoring rustic atmospheres, the generosity of material, and fidelity to scenes of daily life. He regularly exhibited his works at the Salons of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA) between 1924 and 1938, notably landscapes of the Charente.
