Description from the seller
Title: Large hand-carved wooden religious statue – Mary with Child Jesus (Wall plaque) – 47 cm
Object: Wall sculpture / Relief plaque
Material: Wood (likely stained linden wood or walnut)
Period: Mid-century (c. 1930 – 1960)
Region of origin: Europe (possibly Southern Germany / Alpine region or Northern Italy)
Condition: In very good, original vintage condition
Dimensions: Height: 47 cm | Width: approx.
A beautiful and substantial hand-carved wooden wall relief depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. This mid-century sculpture stands an impressive height of no less than 47 centimeters.
The sculpture testifies to pure craftsmanship; the serene facial features of Mary and the expression of the Christ Child are carved with great refinement and detail. Also the dynamic, flowing drapery of the cloak gives the piece a lot of depth and texture.
The rear side is intentionally kept flat and shows the authentic, broad gouge and chisel marks of the woodcarver, confirming the handmade character of this unique piece. At the back there is also a metal pin used to hang the piece simply and neatly on the wall. The wood is in excellent, healthy condition without cracks from drying or missing parts and possesses a warm, deep reddish-brown glow with a beautiful soft luster.
A beautiful and decorative piece of religious folk art for collectors or as a focal point in a classic or modern interior.
