Description from the seller

Hand-painted Vietnamese propaganda poster for the centenary of the birth of Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 – 1990), dated 1990.

At the top: “UNESCO on the 100th anniversary of Uncle Ho’s birth.”
At the bottom: “… He made the glory of our nation, of our people and of our country…”. This is a line from the funeral oration read by Lê Duẩn at Ho Chi Minh’s funeral in September 1969.

Context
In 1987, UNESCO’s General Conference adopted a resolution inviting member states to participate in this centenary. Vietnam mounted a major campaign in 1990, hence the stylized globe behind the portrait. The subject is depicted at the microphone in front of the red flag with a yellow star.

Artist
Nguyen Cong Do is well documented: the British Museum holds a gouache political poster on paper by him, signed and dated 1980, measuring 78 × 55 cm, and he also produced posters for the army publishing house.

Technique and condition
Gouache on high-quality paper, silvery-gray background, handwritten lettering. Crumpled paper, folds, small tears at the edge, pigment wear in the red banner.

Dimensions: 55 × 77 cm

Condition: creases, wrinkles, small tears along the margins, paint wear. Sold as is, unframed.

Unique piece, hand-painted, not a print.
