AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Charming bucolic view with dreamlike colors by Joseph Lamberton, depicting an avenue ringed by hedges leading to a brick house. Signed work and nicely framed.

Title: The Bucolic Alley

Artist: Joseph Lamberton (1867-1943)

Technique: watercolor

Style: neo-impressionism

Signature: Signed

Artwork size: 20x27 cm

Frame size: 43x47 cm

Condition: Good condition, though a few frame imperfections (top corners).

Superb watercolor of the "Renoir of Saint-Étienne": He discovers painting, frequents the studios of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin-Constant at the Académie Julian (he enrolled there in 1895 and 1896), mingles with Jacques-Émile Blanche and Auguste Rodin. He married Adrienne Chapuson in 1892, a drawing and painting teacher at the École normale d'institutrices and at the École pratique de commerce et d'industrie of Saint-Étienne; she becomes his muse and collaborator. Although his talents as a portraitist and colorist are appreciated, Joseph Lamberton would reluctantly leave Parisian life and settle in Saint-Étienne after the death of his only son in 1905. From 1910 to 1913, he was the teacher of the sculptor Germaine de Roton.

Seller's Story

Founded in 2010 in the heart of the Drouot District in Paris by Julien Chaudet, Galerie Le Chevalet Bleu presents a selection of paintings, drawings and lithographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as antique Chinese porcelains.
