Original incunabula leaf from the 1497 Latin edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, printed by Johann Schönsperger in Augsburg, with hand-coloured woodcuts on both sides, measuring 30 x 19 cm and comprising 2 pages.
Description from the seller
This original incunabular leaf (weigendruk) originates from the rare, reduced Latin edition of the famous Chronicle of Nuremberg, printed on February 1, 1497 by Johann Schönsperger in Augsburg [Liber Chronicarum, Schedel]. It concerns the complete leaf Folium CCLXXXVI (typographically indicated as LL xxxvi) with a total paper size of about 30 x 19 cm. The text deals with part of the Sixth Age of the World ("Sexta etas mundi"). One side (recto) shows a large, detailed hand-colored woodcut of the preaching drummer of Niklashausen (Hans Böhm) among his followers and a hand-colored medallion portrait of the murdered Duke of Milan, Galeacius Maria Sforza. The other side (verso) contains a beautiful hand-colored woodcut of the world-renowned astronomer Johannes de Regio Monte (Regiomontanus) with his astronomical instrument, accompanied by text about the events in Trent. The leaf is in good authentic condition with light signs of aging (indeed a small restoration spot of about 1 x cm on recto with loss of letters – see photo) and is offered without reserve price.
