Luther Martin is the author and illustrator of a German Bible titled Biblia, Das ist : Die gantze Schrifft, Altes und Neues Testaments, Teutsch, published in Nuremberg by Christoph Endters, a 1670 in-folio bound in leather with 1220 pages and 34 x 22.5 cm, featuring 237 engravings in-texte and out-of-text with a frontispiece, a black-and-red title page and a full-page portrait of Luther, though several leaves and engravings are missing and pagination contains errors; condition is reasonable.
Description from the seller
A stout folio volume, leather binding with the spine restored, covers worn but binding very solid.
In German. Collated Bible: 237 black engravings, both in-text and full-page.
Frontispiece, a black-and-red title page and a full-page portrait of Luther, 19 unpaginated leaves.
Pagination up to page 1220 with several gaps: a full-page engraving missing at the introduction of the text on page 1. 10 leaves missing from pages 147 to 154, including 4 in-text engravings, and from pages 255 to 266, including 3 in-text engravings. Leaves missing without engravings from pages 1193 to 1196 and then 1221 to 1224.
Some pagination errors (page 1089 instead of 1189, for example).
The paper is sometimes repaired at the margins, small tears. The last gatherings have broken edges (from page 1157 onwards). Stains and smudges on some pages.
From 1656, Wolfgang Endter the Elder published an edition (the 4th) in folio known as the "Dilherr Bible" because the Nuremberg pastor Johann Michael Dilherr (1604-1669) supervised its production.
This Bible achieved phenomenal success; many engravings (woodcuts or copper engravings) were inserted into the two-column text.
This Bible belonged to the Killing family, as evidenced by the inscriptions on the blue endpapers. This family is linked to the history of Klingenthal, an Alsatian village famous for hosting the first royal manufactory of blades established under Louis XV.
