“San Giovanni Evangelista – Il Verbo e l’Aquila” is an intensely spiritual work dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, one of the fundamental figures of the Christian tradition, here represented through some of his most recognizable iconographic attributes: the book, the pen, the eagle, and the reference to the prologue of his Gospel.

The Saint dominates the center of the composition with an inspired and contemplative expression. The face is turned upward, as if seeking a higher light, while in his hand he grips the pen and in front of him he holds an open book, symbol of his mission as evangelist and of the testimony entrusted to the written word. The attitude suggests the moment of inspiration, transforming the scene into a meditation on revelation and divine knowledge.

Beside Saint John there is a majestic eagle, the traditional iconographic symbol of the Evangelist. The raptor, depicted with great solemnity, recalls the capacity of his Gospel to rise toward the deepest mysteries of Christ’s nature. As the eagle soars toward the sky, so does John’s thought naturally guide the gaze beyond the earthly dimension toward the mystery of the Word and divinity.

Particularly significant is the fragment of inscription visible on the stone at the Saint’s feet: “In principio erat Verbum,” “In the beginning was the Word,” the famous opening of the Gospel according to John. This detail powerfully identifies the subject and becomes one of the symbolic keystones of the entire composition, recalling the theme of the eternal Word and the divine light that enters the world.

The landscape surrounding the Saint is broad and solemn. The rocks, the sea, and the distant architectures create a setting suspended between reality and contemplation, while the elevated position of the figure suggests a place of quiet reflection and meditation. The natural environment seems to accompany almost the act of writing, transforming the space into an ideal place of revelation.

Saint John’s figure is wrapped in ample drapery that lends elegance and monumental character to the composition. The composed posture, the absorbed expression, and the presence of the eagle build a image of great balance, in which the human dimension of the Evangelist merges with the depth of his spiritual message.

Created in a refined grayscale with warm sepia tones, the work impresses with the finesse of the line and the rendering reminiscent of an antique devotional engraving. The chiaroscuro shapes the face, the garments, the eagle’s feathers, and the landscape with precision, while the brightness surrounding the Saint endows the entire scene with a contemplative, solemn, and timeless character.
