Madonna and Child, 19th century, oil on canvas laid down on panel, Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Follower of Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato (XIX-XX) - Madonna and Child.
75.5 x 55 cm (without frame) - 97.5 x 76.5 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas laid down on panel, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts the half-length Virgin holding the Child, who stands on a cushion wrapped in a white cloth. The two haloed figures bring their faces close together in a gesture of tender intimacy, set against a dark, neutral background. The Madonna wears the traditional red gown and blue mantle, with a pale veil framing her head. The composition and the softness of the flesh tones recall the Raphaelesque devotional models revived in the 17th century by Sassoferrato and widely adopted in 19th century religious painting. On the back of the panel there is a pencil inscription bearing the name of Sassoferrato.
