Antique Spanish Religious Metal Relief Plaque – Virgen de la Caridad de Cartagena (Pieta) – 1870-1930
Description:
A beautiful antique Spanish devotional plaque featuring a highly detailed, three-dimensional representation of the Virgen de la Caridad (Our Lady of Charity), the revered patron saint of Cartagena, Spain. The iconography follows the classic Pieta structure, depicting the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Jesus Christ at the foot of the cross, set against a heavily decorated, symbolic floral and butterfly banner background.
This stunning piece is executed using the traditional repoussé and chasing technique, manually hammered out from the reverse side to create deep, expressive sculptural high reliefs. The composition is further enhanced by an attached, separate golden-toned halo/crown framing the Virgin Mary. Crafted from a lightweight, finely-worked pewter or silver-plated copper alloy sheet.
* Type: Devotional Sacred Art Plaque / Relief
* Subject: Virgen de la Caridad de Cartagena (Pieta Scene)
* Technique: Repoussé, Chasing, and Embossed Metalworking (Repujado)
* Origin: Spain
* Period: Early to Mid-20th Century
* Dimensions: Approximately 34 cm (Height) × 27 cm (Width)
* Weight: 320 grams (Lightweight, thin-gauge sheet metal)
Condition:
The piece is in a good, unpolished state of historical preservation. It has been preserved unframed (without its original wooden backing), retaining a lovely authentic aged dark patina across the front surface. The reverse shows typical historic signs of age, oxidation, and calcification consistent with its devotional lifespan. No tears or punctures to the metal.
Please carefully review all photos, including side profiles and reverse shots, to verify its excellent 3D relief texture and current condition.
