Description from the seller
Philips Wouwerman (Haarlem, May 24, 1619—ibid, May 19, 1668) was a Dutch painter specializing in battle scenes, hunts, and landscapes. His main skill was painting horses, so he favored subjects that allowed including them.
Oil on panel represents a scene of horses with figures, with dimensions
With frame 66 x 82 cm
Without frame 48 x 64 cm
This work comes with an export license for its sale
He became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1642 and embarked on a prolific and commercially successful career. The expert John Smith produced in 1829–42 a reasoned catalog of this painter, which recorded about 800 works. Subsequently, the expert Hofstede de Groot produced another catalog of Wouwerman that listed over 1200. However, the most recent study of this painter, by Birgit Schumacher (2006), restricts the number of authentic paintings to about 560 and considers that the rest were created by two younger brothers of the master, Pieter (1623–1682) and Jan Pauwelsz. Wouwerman, as well as imitators from various European countries.
