Elegant pair of patinated bronze ritual zun vases from Japan, each 16 cm high and 13.5 cm in diameter, depicting a high-relief mythological scene with Xu You, Chao Fu and their ox by a river, dating to the late Edo or Meiji period.

Elegant pair of antique patinated bronze ritual zun-type vases.
The body of each vase is richly embellished in high relief with a famous mythological scene depicting the wise scholars Xu You and Chao Fu accompanied by their ox by the riverbank, set against a geometric background of leiwen (recurring geometric pattern) and floral motifs (plum/pine).
The necks are widely flared into a festooned, multi-lobed corolla.
The interior as well as the reverse of the base reveal the natural yellow color of the alloy beneath the original brown patina.
In very good overall antique condition.
Beautiful original brown patina with slight minor signs of wear due to age. No holes, no chips, no restorations.
