Bronze Usubata Ikebana vase from late Meiji period, Japan, circa 1900, with a 23 cm high bulbous body and a 21 cm diameter upper plateau, weighing 2 kg, featuring a bas-relief dragon in the central cartouche, two large side handles in cloud and sea‑foam shapes, incised traditional cloud motifs on the neck and circular base, and a brown patina with minor wear consistent with age.
Description from the seller
Elegant and authentic traditional Usubata-type vase (薄端) in bronze with a brown patina from the late Meiji era (circa 1900).
This vessel, characterized by its wide flared upper plateau and flat, was specifically designed for Japanese flower art (Ikebana).
The bulbous central body houses a finely chased bas-relief cartouche, depicting a mythical dragon emerging from tumultuous waves.
It is flanked by two imposing stylized side handles shaped as clouds and foaming seas.
The neck and circular pedestal are delicately adorned with fine incised motifs of traditional clouds.
The bronze base features its original weighted bottom, ensuring perfect stability of the whole (historically designed to counterbalance the weight of floral arrangements). A very beautiful collectible piece, representative of the craftsmanship of Japanese bronzers at the turn of the 20th century.
