A matching rare pair of large Chinese bamboo brush pot pendants (Bitong), each 21 cm high and about 10–12 cm in diameter, with a identical deep reddish-brown patina, carved in high relief and openwork depicting Scholars and Sages in a Mountainous Landscape, dating to the Qing Dynasty (19th century) or early Republic, signed Jiémàn Dāo Zuò beneath the base, and in very good condition with age related bamboo cracks.
Description from the seller
An exceptional and rare matching pair (pendants) of large Chinese bamboo brush pots (Bitong), intricately carved in high relief and openwork. These two large-format pieces (21 cm in height) form a perfectly homogeneous original pair, sharing an identical, deep reddish-brown glossy patina. The continuous hand-carved decoration beautifully wraps around the cylindrical bamboo bodies, depicting the classic and poetic scholarly theme of "Scholars and Sages in a Mountainous Landscape."
• First Pot: Features scholars crossing an arched bridge over a river, surrounded by twisted pine trees and steep rocky cliffs, with a figure observing nature from a promontory.
• Second Pot: Reveals a large multi-story traditional pavilion nestled under the canopy, where two sages engage in a discussion near an open window, while another scholar navigates a traditional boat below.
Each piece rests on three small flat feet carved directly into the lower rim. Underneath each base, the natural bamboo septum features the exact same original ink-written calligraphy signature: "节熳 刀作" (Jiémàn Dāo Zuò), which translates to "Carved by the knife of Jié Màn."
• Period: Qing Dynasty (19th Century) or early Republic period.
• Dimensions: Height: 21 cm | Diameter: approx. 10-12 cm | weight 700 g each
• Condition: Very good overall condition with a magnificent patina of use. Presence of natural longitudinal cracks in the bamboo, typical, expected, and normal for bamboo objects of this age (please see detailed photos).
A unique opportunity to acquire a complete, signed, and untouched pair, which is highly sought after by European and international collectors.
