Cornelis Schut, The Adoration of the Shepherds, Hollstein 8., an etching from 1647 signed in the plate and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
SCHUT, Cornelis.
The Adoration of the Shepherds, Hollstein 8.
Anvers / Antwerp: chez J. Haest, c.1647–55
A lovely copy of this etching by Cornelius Schut, under a large passe partout. Signed in the plate,
published by Haest of Antwerp. In near perfect condition, this engraving shows the Adoration of the Shepherds. With the Holy Family on the left and cherubs in the sky.
The text engraved states `Cor: Schut in cum priuileg; à Anvers chez J.Haest.´
Very good impression with plate tone on laid paper with generous margins around. 15,7 x 11,0 cm. The passe partout is a generous 40cm x 29.5cm, and is very clean and neat. There are no marks or holes / edge wear to the sheet.
This is probably the second state, that with the address of J. Haest (Hollstein 8; Wilmers 1996.)
A rare item.
Cornelis Schut was one of the history painters working in Rubens's Antwerp.
In this print you see the Flemish Baroque at a small, intimate scale.
Schut was known for his energetic, plump cherubs, and they are a signature of his style.
There is a lot of movement in this image.
Antwerp was the centre of Catholic print production in the Spanish Netherlands.
"Cum privilegio," meas with privilege. A protection against copying by others.
