Chinese wooden panel dating from the 20th century, carved and gilded, titled Pannello, mounted in a traditional frame and base with openwork relief, featuring taoist and Buddhist symbolism, dimensions 33.7 x 23.4 x 3.5 cm, provenance private collection, authentic/original, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Chinese carved and gilt wooden panel, set within a traditional frame and supporting base, this is a pierced relief sculpture (openwork) typical of 20th-century Chinese artistic craftsmanship or the late Qing dynasty. The entire openwork carving encloses rich symbolism drawn from Taoist and Buddhist traditions in China, intended to attract positive energies: figures dressed in flowing traditional garments represent sages, Taoist immortals, or high dignitaries, and their presence evokes harmony, wisdom, and a life elevated from a spiritual or intellectual point of view.
Circular, densely arranged motifs above the heads of the figures depict the crown of an ancient pine (sōng) or a longevity tree. In Chinese culture, the pine endures the rigors of winter without losing its needles, becoming the quintessential symbol of resilience, constancy, and long life.
The lower rocks and natural elements represent sacred mountains and earthly stability. In classical Chinese gardens recreated in art, the interaction of vegetation, rocks, and man expresses universal balance and a serene life in close contact with the Dao (The Nature).
The feet and the sides of the lower support are carved with sinuous scrolls, reflecting the form of the Immortality mushroom or the Ruyi scepter (literally meaning “as you wish”), a powerful talisman of good fortune and protection.
The inner carving is fully finished with gold leaf gilding, partially worn with time, creating a strong visual contrast with the red lacquer of the outer rectangular frame.
The panel is set on a gilded wooden supporting base, carved with decorative scroll motifs (ruyi) and enhanced at the center by a cartouche bearing Chinese characters that literally mean
"Success achieved" or "Enterprise accomplished with merit."
Thus it is a classical auspicious inscription that wishes the owner to reach significant milestones, immediate success, recognition in one's career or studies, and the happy completion of every project.
Overall, the object is not merely decorative but serves as a true auspicious emblem of prosperity, stable personal achievements, and lasting health for the home in which it is displayed.
