Baron de Münchhausen & Théophile Gautier fils / Gustave Doré - Aventures du Baron de Münchhausen - 1850

An enthralling illustrated edition in its handsome linen-covered binding of one of the great classics of European burlesque and fantastical literature, based on the legendary accounts of Baron Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Münchhausen, famous for his implausible stories, impossible exploits, and his excessive fondness for boasting -

The baron’s character, presented as an aristocratic traveler, hunter, soldier, and adventurer, tells with unflappable seriousness events that constantly defy the laws of nature, turning the travel narrative and military memoirs into a sequence of absurd, wondrous, and deliberately exaggerated scenes -

Each adventure rests on a fundamental principle: the more unbelievable the tale seems, the more the narrator presents it as a perfectly ordinary truth, thereby creating a comic dissonance between the gravity of the tone and the impossibility of the events recounted -
