Description from the seller

Patinated bronze with gilded accents
Signed and dated: “J. Clésinger, Rome 1858”
Fitted with the stamp “Réduction Mécanique – Collas”
H. 88 × W. 30 × D. 30 cm

Elegant and imposing bronze sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814–1883), depicting his famous Zingara, or Neapolitan dancer.

The young woman is depicted in a graceful and theatrical pose, with her arms raised above her head while she holds a tambourine. The spinning motion of her body and the richly worked, flowing draperies give the composition a special sense of rhythm, dynamism and movement.

Clésinger paid much attention to refining details. The jewelry, necklaces, costume ornaments and the tambourine are carefully modeled. The gilded accents form a lovely contrast with the deep brown patina of the bronze.

Signed and dated:
“J. Clésinger, Rome 1858”

Fitted with the stamp:
“Réduction Mécanique – Collas”

The original model was created in 1858 in Rome and exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1859. The composition is also known under the title La Danseuse napolitaine.

Bronze editions of this model were produced using the mechanical reduction process developed by Achille Collas, which enabled sculptures to be reproduced in various scale formats while preserving the proportions of the original model.

A particularly attractive French sculpture from the 19th century, in which movement, elegance and rich decorative detailing come together.
