Description from the seller
Material Memory
MiLo (1976), Netherlands
Material Memory transforms remnants of the painting process into a new abstract composition. Across a loosely brushed field of soft grey and off-white, irregular fragments of muted colour appear to drift and scatter across the canvas.
The coloured elements are made from dried acrylic paint recovered from the artist’s porcelain mixing containers. As paint accumulates and dries into thicker layers, it can be loosened and removed in irregular sheets, patches and circular forms. These remnants, carrying colours and traces from previous painting sessions, are then incorporated directly into the new work.
Attached to the canvas, the fragments create a tactile, relief-like surface and give the composition a physical dimension beyond the painted background. Ochres, rust tones, deep blacks, muted reds and occasional touches of blue interrupt the restrained field without overwhelming it.
Their seemingly spontaneous placement creates a balance between minimalism and controlled disorder: open and airy from a distance, yet rich in small irregularities, colour, texture and physical relief when viewed up close. In Material Memory, what would normally remain as residue of the painting process becomes the material for something entirely new.
