Description from the seller
Antique French aneroid barometer with exposed mechanism, circa 1900
Charming antique aneroid barometer housed in a brass case, featuring an attractive open centre revealing the mechanical movement.
The French dial is graduated from approximately 690 to 790 mmHg and bears the traditional weather indications:
Tempête – Gde Pluie – Pluie ou Vent – Variable – Beau Temps – Beau Fixe – Très Sec.
The instrument has two hands: the blue/black hand indicates atmospheric pressure, while the fine gilt hand serves as an adjustable reference marker and can be positioned using the central knob.
The barometer has been tested and the mechanism responds correctly to changes in atmospheric pressure. The indicating hand moves when pressure is varied and subsequently returns. No guarantee can naturally be given regarding professional calibration or absolute accuracy, as this is an antique scientific instrument.
The brass case is fitted with a suspension ring and small rear feet, allowing the instrument to either hung or displayed standing.
Dimensions: approximately 9 cm diameter
Weight: approximately 204 g (7.20 oz)
The barometer shows genuine signs of age and use, including patina, oxidation, scratches and wear to the brass case. The dial and visible mechanism remain very decorative. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
No manufacturer’s signature has been identified. Based on its construction, typography and style, the instrument appears to date from approximately the late 19th / early 20th century, probably around 1900–1910. Similar open-mechanism barometers were produced and distributed in France during this period.
Offered without reserve.
A very attractive small antique scientific instrument, particularly decorative thanks to its exposed mechanical movement.
