Handcrafted tea caddy carved from Yakusugi wood by master artisan Watanabe Shige (1990–2000), Japan; dimensions 7 x 6 x 7 cm, in as new condition.
Description from the seller
This extraordinary Japanese tea caddy, handcrafted by revered master artisan Watanabe Shige, is carved from precious Yakusugi timber — among Japan’s most valuable and extraordinarily rare woods.
Yakusugi logging was legally banned in 1962. Yakushima Island, home to these ancient trees, was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1993. No new live timber may be harvested legally in modern times; craftsmen can only utilise ancient fallen trunks, buried logs and leftover fragments. Genuine Yakusugi works are incredibly scarce and highly sought after by elite collectors across the globe.
The timber releases a unique, enduring sand-cypress fragrance that stays permanently embedded within its grain. This tea canister is fully hand-carved and painstakingly polished following classical Japanese woodworking techniques. Its surface is finished exclusively with pure natural beeswax, with zero chemical lacquer, paint or water-based coatings applied. It is entirely eco-friendly and non-toxic, retaining the raw organic texture and innate beauty of ancient Yakusugi wood.
It is perfect for personal collection and daily tea use. Additionally, it serves as an exquisite luxury gift for distinguished friends and connoisseurs. Every gentle contour and refined surface demonstrates the master’s meticulous handiwork. A museum-level masterpiece, ideal for serious wood art and tea enthusiasts.
