Distribution
It breeds in northern Europe and Asia, from Norway to eastern Siberia, and winters in a band that includes the Mediterranean coasts, equatorial Africa, the Middle East, India, and the coasts of Indochina. In Italy it is a passage migrant, and winters in some localities. The global population is estimated at several hundred thousand individuals.

Its breeding habitats are tundra and taiga marshes, while at other times of the year it can be found more generally in wetlands with shallow water, whether fresh or brackish.
