G. T. Doin’s Musée des Protestans célèbres is an original edition in ten illustrated volumes (in-8°), published in Paris 1821–1824 and bound in green morocco, presenting biographies and literary notices of prominent reformers and Protestant figures.
Description from the seller
G. T. Doin – Musée des Protestans célèbres, or portraits and biographical and literary notices of the most eminent figures in the history of the Reformation and Protestantism.
Paris, 1821-1824.
Fine and important set of 10 volumes in-8°, corresponding to the five volumes published in two parts, in their original early 19th-century edition.
Published under the direction of G. T. Doin, this historical and biographical work traces the lives of the great personalities of the Reformation and European Protestantism.
It gathers numerous biographies devoted to rulers, theologians, reformers, writers, and political figures who marked the religious and intellectual history of Europe.
Important illustration:
The edition is illustrated with 62 off-text lithographed portraits, according to the bibliographic description of the work.
Several portraits are visible in the volumes, notably those of Jeanne d’Albret, Louise de Coligny, and Gaspard de Coligny.
The exact number of portraits present in this copy has not been verified individually.
Very beautiful period bindings:
The ten volumes feature remarkable homogeneous bindings in green basane, with:
* Plain backs richly decorated with motifs and gold lines.
* Red title and volume labels.
* Ornamental borders on the boards with golden dentelle.
* Marbled edges.
* Beautiful decorative harmony of the whole.
State of preservation:
Old set displaying a beautiful overall uniformity.
Bindings with rubbing and signs of use, particularly to the joints, spines, and some corners.
Inside pages generally well preserved, with some foxing, browning, and signs of time.
An old repair with adhesive is visible on pages 137-138 of volume IV, part two.
The photographs allow appreciation of the general condition of the works.
A fine bibliophilic set of over 200 years, interesting both for its historical content and its lithographed portraits as well as for its elegant decorative bindings of the 19th century.
