Matthieu or Matthijs van Plattenberg (Antwerp 1608 - Paris 1660)
Important Flemish painter who painted and was primarily a master of landscapes and seascapes. Settled in Paris, he became the "peintre du Roy pour les Mers". He rarely signed and/or dated his works. In the Paris period he called himself Matthieu Platte-Montaigne or Platte-Montagne, and his works show close similarities with those of Pieter Mulier the Younger, the Cavalier Tempesta or Tempesta. His son Nicolas Platte-Montagne (b. 1631 - d. 1706), a pupil of Ph. de Champagne, was a well-regarded portraitist. Noted is the Portrait where master and pupil are depicted together (Rotterdam, Museum Boymans - van Beuningen).
