Description from the seller
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024)
The Beast
Ink and watercolor on paper
Signature: On the back, studio stamp “Marcus de Vestele / Atelier de l’artiste”
Dimensions: 52.5 × 35.5 cm
Sold unframed
Condition: generally good. Paper is soft, ink true, washes held. On the back, a few small conservation stains, without affecting the front.
Provenance: artist Marcus de Vestele's workshop.
Description:
Ink and wash. On the left, a yellow field: two masked heads at the top, a leaf-shaped form, and four vertical silhouettes at the bottom, like a small group standing. In the center, a blue stripe, and a black figure that climbs or falls, arms raised. On the right, a large ochre rectangle, wall or table, closed by a black line. A black beast lies on it, white eye, elongated body, tail drooping.
The paper remains bare between the three masses. Nothing describes a place: a yellow, a blue, an ochre, and emptiness. Quick ink, broad washes, beast barely contained. Direct gesture, in the restrained primitive figuration associated with Cobra.
Sheet taken directly from the artist's workshop.
Biography:
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist renowned first as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in Bardiglio.
Alongside, he pursued throughout his life a body of work on paper that long remained in the studio, now sought after.
Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he keeps in his work the rough figure, the spontaneous line, and the tension between beast and abstraction.
This sheet is an example: ink and wash, presence held more by color than by drawing.
