Provenance: artist’s studio Marcus de Vestele.
Description:
Ink from 1975. A large bird at the center, round eye, hooked beak, washed gray body, black legs planted under a horizon line.
Around it, three smaller birds: to the left a winged shape, almost insect-like, connected to the head by a fine line; above, two brief silhouettes, barely perched; to the right, a profile bird, beak open, body black as it runs.
The paper remains bare. Nothing describes a place: a line, four beasts, and emptiness. Quick ink, dry wash, retouched on the head. Direct gesture, figures barely held, in the restrained primitive figuration of Cobra.
Dédicaced sheet, directly from the artist’s studio.
Biography:
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) was a Belgian artist known first as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in Bardiglio.
Alongside, he pursued throughout life a body of work on paper that remained in the studio for a long time, today sought after. Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he preserves the rustic figure, the spontaneous line, and the tension between beast and abstraction.
This 1975 ink is an example: rapid line, gray wash, bird held more by gesture than by drawing.
