AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Watercolor of Leuvehaven in Rotterdam in 1907.

Beautiful work in exceptional condition. The entrance/exit of Leuvehaven with the Arch Bridges at the rear right, visible sheet size 28 x 48 cm.
In possession of a gilded wooden frame with a passe partout in very good condition. Recently reframed; the work has been kept in a folder for years. The colors are therefore still phenomenal!!

The painting can be inspected on site before the end of the auction; please ask the auctioneer for information.

Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek was an Impressionist painter who is regarded as belonging to the second generation of the Hague School. He earned international fame with his river and harbor scenes. The native Rotterdamer was fascinated by the bustle of the Rotterdam harbors and the quays of the historic city, which were still largely intact before the outbreak of World War II. He mainly painted and sketched atmospheric, expansive cityscapes with boats and small vessels. His work is often compared with that of Jacob Maris, one of the best-known masters of the Hague School, whom Van Mastenbroek greatly admired. Van Mastenbroek painted his oil paintings mainly at home in his studio, while his watercolors were more faithfully produced outdoors.

At some point in his career Van Mastenbroek began to show more interest in the changing Dutch landscape, where industrialization became visible at a rapid pace. Modern motorboats, steamships, steel bridges and sometimes cranes and dockworkers appear in the painter's oeuvre. The early 20th century was an exciting time, during which Rotterdam was busy developing into a world port. After the great flood of 1916, which Van Mastenbroek watched closely and recorded in drawings, in 1920 work finally began on one of the century's most spectacular projects, the Zuiderzeewerken: the closure of the Zuiderzee, the formation of the IJsselmeer, and the diking and poldering of Flevoland.

The work is carefully packed and shipped internationally insured and by registered mail.
