Ulisse Aldrovandi was a professor of natural history at the University of Bologna and one of the most influential naturalists of his time. His monumental illustrated encyclopaedia of the natural world was published largely posthumously and became an important reference for European scholars and collectors.
De Piscibus was first published in Bologna in 1613 and contains numerous woodcut illustrations documenting the extraordinary diversity of aquatic creatures known to early naturalists.
