Description
Fine old set comprising the five volumes of the work Explication des Évangiles, written by César-Guillaume de La Luzerne, bishop of Langres, a French religious figure and intellectual of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Published in Lyon in 1807 by Savy, this set belongs to a new edition revised and corrected.
The five volumes present their old full brown leather bindings, with gilded decorations on the backs, dark title pieces bearing the inscription “Explication des Évangiles” and volume-number pieces numbered 1 to 5.
Interesting peculiarity: the five volumes bear an identical old handwritten signature, presumably “Costemal” or “Costemalle,” indicating a common provenance. The signer's identity is not established.
These works constitute a fine testimony to French religious publishing under the First Empire.

- Scuffing and patina on the leather bindings.
- Wear visible at the headcaps, corners, and ends of the spines.
- Some small losses and alterations to the title pieces.

- Old handwritten signatures present in all five volumes.
- Possible foxing and browning related to age.
The five volumes are dated 1807 and feature a uniform binding.
