Cleopatra, oil on canvas, 60 × 50 cm, attributed to the Emilia‑Italian School (XVII century) in Italy, unsigned, year 1600, a portrait, in discrete condition, sold by owner or dealer.
Description from the seller
Cleopatra – Italian School, Emilia region, 17th century (stylistic attribution)
Oil on canvas, 60 × 51 cm
Interesting painting depicting The Death of Cleopatra, a subject of great fortune in Italian Baroque painting.
The work presents stylistic characteristics attributable to the Emiliano classicist tradition of the Seicento, with echoes of the pictorial sensibility of Guido Reni and his circle.
Particularly suggestive is the portrayal of the face, with a melancholic gaze turned upward, the delicate modeling of the flesh tones, and the refined contrast between the bright draperies and the dark background. The serpent, pressed to the breast, identifies the dramatic moment of the death of the Egyptian queen.
Original oil painting on canvas, not a print, presented in the current conservation conditions, with signs of time, craquelure, wear of the pictorial surface and possible previous conservation interventions, to be verified.
It should be noted that the luminous reflections and bluish tones visible in the photograph are due to lighting conditions and should not be interpreted as actual chromatic characteristics of the work.
A work of decorative and collectible interest, worthy of historical-artistic study.
Dimensions: 60 × 51 cm.
Period: to be ascertained; stylistic model of the 17th century.
Conservation status: conditions commensurate with the presumed age and the painting’s conservation history, as per photographic documentation.
