Description from the seller

Sentimens d'amour tirez des meilleurs poetes modernes. Par le Sieur Corbinelli. Premiere Partie. Volume 1 (of 2) only - [Jean] Corbinelli (editor)

Paris: Chez Thomas Iolly, au Palais, dans la petite Salle des Merciers, à la Palme, & aux Armes d’Hollande, 1665. Frontispiece, [24], 345, [1] pages. 15cm x 9cm. Contemporary full leather binding with gilt decorated boards, gilt lettered and decorated spine with 5 raised bands, and red sprinkled edges. First edition, Volume I only (of 2), of this exceptionally rare 17th-century French anthology of galant and amatory poetry compiled by the prominent intellectual Jean Corbinelli. Published during the absolute peak of the Précieuses literary movement in Paris, this collection captures the evolving Baroque aesthetic of romantic discourse, madrigals, and elegies. Corbinelli's compilation served as a major repository of contemporary French poetry, breaking down verse into thematic sections. This first volume features fragments and full poems from the most celebrated modern writers of the era—including Paul Pellisson and Philippe Quinault. Copies bearing Thomas Jolly's specific imprint are highly prized variant issues from the tight-knit network of Palais-Royal booksellers who shared publishing privileges for the era's commercialized love literature. Comes with an engraved frontispiece as well as engraved head-/ tailpieces, initials, and decorations throughout.
Rubbing, bumping, wear, and some damage to the boards and spine. The spine is fraying at both ends (see photos). Pen and pencil markings on the front pastedown endpaper and the recto of the front free endpaper. Pen inscription and drawing on the verso of the front free endpaper. Pencil markings on the back pastedown endpaper. A part of the bottom of the title page is torn out, affecting the text a bit (see photos). Some small tears in the margins of page 11/12, not affecting the content. Some browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear and the binding is solid. Overall, a well-preserved copy in good condition.
