Description from the seller
Lovely example of a false imprint - a Catholic work printed in Protestant Amsterdam.
An attractive copy of this First edition in Dutch. Original vellum binding, Black titles to the spine state "Categismus van de Bisschop van Condom." Slight rubbing to the vellum only.
Half title. Attractive vignette of the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the apostles to the title page. Ornate initials and decorations to some pages. This is a work in two parts. The catechism of the Bishop of Condom, together with the catechism for holy days, Holy Sunday (Easter Sunday) and parish mass. Text in Dutch. Internally clean and tidy, the binding is slightly shaken, but overall in good, sound condition. An old archival tape repair to reinforce one gather. The only authorisations are those of the Paris edition, carried over: Bossuet's own approbation, signed 'Bénigne, É. de Meaux', and the French royal privilege, reprinted in French at the end. Neither had any force outside France, and there is no Antwerp or Brussels approbation. This is consistent with the Catharijneconvent's attribution of the printing to Amsterdam.
[20], [i], 246, [viii], 122, [iv]. pp 140 by 190mm (5½ by 7½ inches).
Conforms to FirstSearch / WorldCat OCLC: 65540156. Although this work can be found in a number of libraries, these are all in the Low Countries. None in France, the UK or USA.
Bossuet, the "Eagle of Meaux", tutor to the Dauphin and the most formidable Catholic controversialist of his age, issued his catechism in 1687, two years after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. It quickly became a model for diocesan catechisms across Europe, and this translation followed within a year. The spine still calls him "Bisschop van Condom", the title under which Dutch readers knew him from his widely translated Exposition de la doctrine catholique (1671). The Antwerp imprint is probably fictitious: the Museum Catharijneconvent records the publisher as Amsterdam (BCNI 14776). If so, this is a Catholic catechism printed in the Protestant Dutch Republic under a false imprint.
