Description from the seller

TEODORO GUGLIELMO WITTING
(Frankfurt 1793 - Naples, 1860)
View of the Neapolitan countryside with Vesuvius in the background
Oil on canvas, 63.5 x 81 cm
Signed ‘WITTING’ at the lower right
Frame size 78 x 96 x 6 cm (approx.)

NOTE: Publication catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection (Pdf). Signed artwork. Certificate of Guarantee and Legitimate Provenance. Work with gilded and worked frame (defects).

We present in the catalog a splendid oil-on-canvas painting with excellent craftsmanship, depicting an ideal view of the Neapolitan countryside with Vesuvius in the background, a subject typical of 19th-century Italian landscape painting linked to the Grand Tour phenomenon.
In the background stands the unmistakable profile of Vesuvius, emitting a light plume of smoke. The foreground landscape is dominated by rocky outcrops, dense Mediterranean vegetation, and majestic stone pines (Pinus pinea), elements symbolic of the classical Italian landscape.
Along the dirt path on the right one notices the presence of popular figures in traditional costumes (a woman with a basket on her head accompanied by a child). Further to the left, perched on a hill, rises an ancient farmhouse or fortified tower.
The work bears the strong influence of the Posillipo School and Romantic landscape painting, characterized by a warm, golden, atmospheric light that enhances the bucolic idyll of nature.
The piece, signed at the bottom “Witting,” confirms the exact authorship of the work, attributable to the German painter Teodoro Guglielmo Witting (also known in Germany as Theodor Wilhelm Witting), an artist born in Frankfurt am Main in 1793 and who died around 1860.
Moving to Italy in the 1820s, Witting settled in Naples in 1822. Here he became a colleague of Giacinto Gigante at the famous school of the Dutch master Antoon Sminck van Pitloo, founder of the Posillipo School.
Witting integrated himself so deeply into the Neapolitan artistic environment that he married Flora Vianelli, sister of the painter Achille Vianelli and of Eloisa (who was in turn the wife of Giacinto Gigante).
This composition faithfully reflects the standards of his production: a combination of rigorous analytical Northern sensibility and the lyrical interpretation of the light of Campania, typical of Romantic landscape painting.
The paintings and views by Witting dedicated to the Posillipo, Sorrento, and Amalfi Coast areas are today documented in important collections and auction catalogs.
Regarding its conservation status, the work presents generally discrete conditions and the painting surface shows patina.
The perimeter edges show signs of time, with small fraying of the canvas (or hardboard/panel, typical supports for studies of the era) and some wear traces from rubbing along the outer margins.
The level of detail in the foliage, human figures, and the smoke of Vesuvius is clearly legible, indicating there have been no macroscopic color losses or extensive coving (cracking of the surface).
The surface shows a slight and natural yellowing due to the oxidation of the final protective varnish. This layer imperceptibly alters the cooler tones of the sky and the lighter color transitions, a normal condition for a work aged about 180–200 years.
A thin layer of dust or atmospheric deposit is noticeable, consistent with natural aging of the work. There do not appear to be any gross restorations or obvious overpaints to the naked eye, but for scientific certainty an inspection with Wood’s lamp (UV rays) would be necessary. The measurements are 63.5 x 81 cm.
The painting is set in a prestigious carved and gilded wooden frame, of great impact (size 78 x 96 x 6 cm, presence of defects).
"The frame shown in the photos above was added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so it is ready for display upon arrival. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as ground for opening a claim or requesting order cancellation."
