Johan Meijer (1885-1970) - Landscape painting in Blaricum

Johannes (Johan) Meijer (Zwolle, April 5, 1885 – Laren, April 29, 1970) was a Dutch painter. He lived in Amsterdam until 1912, then until 1925 at Zandgat 906 in Laren and subsequently at villa Le Paradou on Heideweg 5 in Blaricum. He was married to Alberta Johanna Smetz. Meijer studied at the School for Crafts and Art (Amsterdam) and attended the evening class of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam for three years (1907-1910). Johan Meijer was, among others, a pupil of Arnold Marc Gorter. He was Gorter’s assistant for seven years. Afterwards he continued his studies in Paris. Meijer’s style was strongly influenced by his master Gorter. He primarily painted landscapes in a neo-impressionist manner.

During his period in Blaricum he mainly chose Gooiersgracht as a subject. In all kinds of weather he captured the trees and water. He had a preference for birch trees and willows.

Johan Meijer taught Wilbrandus Joannes Koppius and Alberta Johanna Smetz.

Oil on canvas, canvas size 38 x 75 cm, in very good condition. Heijdenrijk frame in reasonably good to good condition with light signs of wear; this is included free of charge with the work within the EU. Outside the EU, due to size and fragility, it is not included.

The work is carefully packed and sent internationally by registered mail.

Johan Meijer was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Sint Lucas in Amsterdam, the Vereeniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars Laren-Blaricum and the Nederlandse Kunstkring. He exhibited, among other places, at the 1939 exhibition Onze kunst van heden (Our Art of the Present) at the Rijksmuseum.
