Description from the seller

“Army of Flowers” presents an exuberant floral composition in which an abundant arrangement of blossoms and foliage rises from an ornate decorative vessel. Dominated by intense shades of blue, green, turquoise and red, the painting transforms the traditional floral still life into something more expressive and dynamic. White flowers punctuate the dense vegetation, while sweeping leaves and loosely defined petals create a sense of movement across the picture.

Kinoko combines bold colour, gestural mark-making and layered forms to give the composition an energetic, almost dreamlike quality. The strongly worked blue ground provides a vivid stage for the flowers, while the ornamental vessel introduces a contrasting sense of structure and symmetry. The result is a contemporary floral painting that balances the recognisable language of still life with an expressive, almost abstract treatment of nature.

KiNOKO

KiNOKO is a Colombian artist whose practice encompasses painting, works on paper and publishing. Born in Medellín in 1977 and now based in London, the artist’s work is rooted in an enduring fascination with dreams, memory and the unexpected relationship between image and language.

For more than a decade, KiNOKO has maintained an extensive archive of dreams, recording recurring images, symbols and fragments of narrative that gradually find their way into visual and written work. This ongoing collection forms a central part of the practice, where the associative logic of dreams becomes a means of exploring the unconscious and reinterpreting the familiar from unexpected perspectives.

Moving fluidly between painting and writing, KiNOKO’s work often brings together humour, domestic imagery and surreal encounters. Rather than translating dreams literally, the artist draws upon their fragmented and unpredictable nature, allowing disparate images and ideas to coexist with a sense of intimacy and strangeness.

KiNOKO studied at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts before completing an MFA in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute on a full fellowship. The artist’s professional practice spans more than two decades across painting, design and publishing, including the publication of five children’s books, two of which were also illustrated.

The work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations at AAF Hampstead and AAF Battersea, alongside solo exhibitions at Christine X Gallery in Malta, Gallery Hadeland Lights in Norway, Gallery LNM in Oslo, Arendal Kunstforeningen and Gallery Galtung Huser. In 2008, KiNOKO was nominated for the Carnegie Art Award.

The artist’s paintings are held in public and private collections, including the Office of the Prime Minister of Norway, KPA Art Collection, Standard Norway and Høyskolen Kristiania. KiNOKO has received support from Arts Council Norway, Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond and Innovation Norway, and has mentored art and design students at the University of the Arts London.

Through painting and language, KiNOKO creates a space where dreams and everyday life intersect. The resulting works inhabit a delicate territory between the domestic and the unconscious, inviting viewers to discover the unfamiliar within the ordinary.
