Venetian lagoon, unsigned oil on canvas by Giuseppe Miti Zanetti (1859–1929), Italy, Realism, dating to the 19th century, 57 × 99 cm with frame.
Description from the seller
Giuseppe Miti Zanetti (Modena 1859 - Milan 1929) - Venetian lagoon.
47 x 90 cm (without frame) - 57 x 99 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
On the reverse, label of the firm Ciro Segato of Venice, supplier of varnishes and artists' materials.
Born in Modena, Giuseppe Miti Zanetti trained at the Academy of his native city before settling in Venice, where he spent most of his career. A painter and etcher, he devoted himself mainly to lagoon landscapes, interpreted in the Venetian tradition of the late nineteenth century, and regularly took part in the main national exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale.
The painting depicts a scene of lagoon life: a young boatman pushes a flat-bottomed boat towards the grassy bank with a pole, while a woman in a white headscarf sits beside a basket. In the background are some sails and a lantern on a post, beneath a wide cloudy sky rendered with dense, textured brushstrokes. The light palette and diffused light convey the still atmosphere of the lagoon. A smaller version (32.5 x 59.5 cm), signed lower right, was sold on 15 December 2007 at the Finarte-Semenzato auction house in Venice.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of preservation of the painted surface.
