Lion and lioness at sunset, a 19th-century Italian oil painting in Romantic style, attributed to the French school (XIX), sold with a carved and gilded frame.
Description from the seller
French school (XIX) - Lion and lioness at sunset.
54 x 65 cm (without frame) - 68 x 78 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a 19th century carved and gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower right: «Eug. Delacroix».
The painting shows a pair of lions on a rocky height, set against a wide mountain landscape at sunset. The lion, crouching on the right, turns his head in profile with open jaws and raised tail, while the lioness, in the foreground and seen from behind, leans towards the valley as if on watch. The sky, streaked with bright red fading into the blue and grey tones of the mountains, gives the scene a dramatic mood.
The work belongs to the 19th century popularity of big cat subjects, which French Romantic painting made famous. The signature refers to the repertoire of Eugène Delacroix, and the canvas shares his taste for textured brushwork, strong contrasts of light and exotic settings.
