Two-volume Italian edition of Elementi dell'aritmetica universale e della geometria piana e solida by Filippo Antonio Revelli, published by Ignazio G. Genova around 1799, original Italian language; full leather binding with folded plates, 508 pages, 21 by 13 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Eighteenth-century mathematical opera by Filippo Antonio Revelli, former professor of geometry at the Royal University of Turin.
Published in two volumes, it systematically treats universal arithmetic, the calculation of fractions, powers and roots, plane and solid geometry, proportions, geometric figures and the properties of curves, including ellipse, parabola, hyperbola and cycloid.
Of particular interest are the folded plates, containing numerous geometric figures and mathematical demonstrations.
Collation of the exemplar
Volume I: [12], 199, [1 blank] pages.
Text signatures: A–I⁸, K–M⁸, N⁴.
Six preliminary leaves including a blank leaf, the title page, Giuseppe De Nasio’s letter and the Reader’s section.
Text collated, with a consistent sequence of signatures and no gaps detected.
Volume II: 296 total pages, including the title page and the last blank page
Signatures: t⁴, a–h⁸, j–s⁸.
Text collated, with a consistent sequence of signatures and no gaps detected.
Illustrative apparatus: includes 11 folded plates, numbered I–XI, with mathematical and geometric figures.
Plate XII is missing, as provided for by the work and explicitly referenced in the second volume’s text. This absence is expressly stated.
Bindings and conservation
Two volumes in uniform and elegant late brown morocco bindings, with backstrips richly decorated with gold geometric and floral borders, with gilt titles and volume numbering, frames and corner ornaments impressed on the boards.
Solid bindings, with boards firmly joined to the volumes and no sagging detected.
Guard sheets and endpapers of the rear binding, with waviness, creases and color variations.
Interior generally well preserved, with occasional stains, browning, signs of use and paper irregularities.
The folded plates show the usual creases, with some signs of aging.
Slight abrasions and color changes of the leather, as documented by photographs.
Overall good condition, considering the age of the work and the defects described.
Carefully examining all photographs is recommended, as they form an integral part of the description.
