Origin: United Kingdom (RFC - Royal Flying Corps / RAF)
Exceptional and very rare rigid leather moulded aviator helmet dating from World War I (1917). This type of safety helmet was used by British pilots and observers to protect the head in case of impact during hard landings or turbulence.
Design: Rigid bolted shell with a rounded crown in brown leather, equipped with upper lateral ventilation eyelets. Ear protection: Soft leather flaps incorporating ventilation/ear openings in perforated metal rosettes.
Markings: Original label perfectly legible inside the cap: "MANUFACTURED BY E. DAY - ST ALBANS - 1917" "N° 2 TAUTZ & Co - AVIATION SAFETY HELMET" "PATENT No. 17855"
Central logo: "SIGN OF DAY"
Condition: Very good original overall condition. The leather retains a superb patina of the era with only light superficial signs of use consistent with its age (100+ years).
Clean and complete inside with its original lining.
Museum-grade collectible piece, increasingly difficult to find in this condition with its original tag intact and dated.
