Description from the seller
André Sangsue (1931-2012)
Winter Landscape
Oil on panel (Isorel Pavatex)
Signed
24x35 cm (dimensions estimated with frame: about 34x45 cm)
The work is a suggestive and refined creation by Swiss painter André Sangsue (1931-2012), an artist valued for his remarkable landscape sensitivity and for the ability to capture the most rarefied, intimate, and silent atmospheres. Through a palette skillfully modulated and a painterly approach that looks to the nuances of the soul as well as to visual reality, Sangsue transfigures the landscape, elevating it to a poetic and timeless dimension. This "Paysage en hiver" represents a masterful demonstration of the author's atmospheric technique.
The composition is deftly built on the clear contrast between two luminous and material registers. In the foreground runs a dark band of dense and barren winter vegetation, from which emerges, in the center of the scene, the dark, contorted silhouette of a bare branch reaching upward. This natural element, symbol of the rigidity of the cold season, acts as a perspective backdrop to a background of extraordinary ethereal lightness. The scene quickly evolves into thick, luminous, golden fog that envelops everything. Among the hazy vapors and the delicate yellow and pink reflections, the spectral shapes of architectural structures—presumably domes or towers—emerge timidly, giving the entire painting an enchanted, mystical, and profoundly silent aura.
The oil technique is applied with soft glazes and an excellent use of sfumato, which blends the edges between earth, architectures, and sky into a single harmonious visual unity. The painting is executed on a rigid Masonite support, specifically designated as Isorel Pavatex. In this regard, on the back of the panel there is an interesting and detailed original cataloging label. The label accurately lists the artist’s name, the dimensions of the panel (24x35), the execution technique, and an intriguing technical note: citing the Traité de la peinture Drouant, the text emphasizes that the Isorel Pavatex material should be considered a painting support far superior and more stable than traditional canvas. The painting, signed in the corner, is enclosed within a solid and classical wooden frame, characterized by a matte dark green outer finish, enriched by a gold inner profile and a linear white mat that adds depth and airiness to the composition. Based on the visual proportions of the wooden frame, one can deduce that the total footprint of the work including the frame is around 34x45 centimeters.
An additional and fundamental element of value is the illustrious provenance of the panel, originally part of the Pierre Strinati Collection.
The frame, if visible in photos, is included in the lot as a pure gift from me and is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and, given its delicacy, is not insured. Consequently, any defects already present on the frame are not reported and any damage to it during transport will not be considered for claims or returns. The wall mounting system could also be removed. Glass often breaks during transport and can damage the work. They can be removed on request at no additional cost. Please let me know if you prefer the work shipped without the frame; otherwise I cannot assume responsibility.
Notes on shipping and customs
The item ships from Geneva, Switzerland. For this reason, delivery times to European Union countries may be slightly longer than usual due to standard customs procedures.
In case the package is returned due to an incorrect address, unclaimed package, or unpaid duties, the buyer must pay for a second shipment and cover return costs.
I would also remind you that, since Switzerland is outside the EU customs area, import duties, local VAT, and customs duties are entirely the buyer’s responsibility and will be charged by authorities in your country upon delivery. I recommend informing yourself in advance to avoid surprises. Alternatively, if you have the possibility, picking up in person in Geneva is always my preferred option and I strongly recommend it, as it will eliminate shipping costs and ensure maximum safety for the artwork. If shipping is chosen, I will do my best to package the painting to protect it during the journey.
