Description from the seller
FAEHNLEIN Jules (19th-20th century)
“Rue de l'Apport à Dinan”
Oil on canvas,
Signed bottom right,
Beautiful work by the Strasbourg-born painter Jules Faehnlein, depicting a rare view of the historic center of Dinan, more precisely the Rue de l'Apport or the Rue des Cordeliers. We can locate this street thanks to the advertising sign on the wall of the house to the right, “DAVY Chapelier.”
The Rue des Cordeliers or Rue de l’Apport suffered a severe accidental fire on February 3 and 4, 1907, destroying 5 timber-framed houses. Nevertheless, the first two timber-framed houses visible in the painting are still visible today in Dinan.
Our work is a beautiful and rare testament to the activity in the historic center of Dinan at the beginning of the 20th century.
A pupil of Jean-Jacques Henner and Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jules Faehnlein worked in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1895 and 1912. He earned an honorable mention in 1898. He specialized in portraits and interior scenes: Portrait of a Woman, Portrait of the Author, Portrait of Mr. H. Letocart, Corner of the Studio, Interior in Haute-Savoie. At the 1908 Toulouse Salon, the painter exhibited several views of Dinan.
Note: An old small restoration, without impact, is visible on the back of the canvas.
Dimensions: 46.5 x 38.5 cm without frame and 61 x 53 cm with its Louis XVI-style gilded wooden frame.
