Description from the seller
MALFROY Charles (1862-1939)
"Le quai aux moules, Martigues 1895"
Oil on canvas,
Located bottom left: "Le quai aux moules à Martigues",
Signed and dated 1895 at the bottom right,
Beautiful luminous work by the painter Charles Malfroy which depicts a lively view of the mussel quay at Martigues. One can observe workers sorting mussels or mending fishing nets, as well as fishermen in their boats.
The painter used a palette of warm colors that perfectly captures the light of a summer day in Provence.
We can compare our work to a composition by the painter Julien Gagliardini who also immortalizes, at the same period, this corner of the quay at Martigues where mussels are sorted.
Originating from Lyon, Charles Malfroy established his painting studio in Martigues called the "Venice of Provence".
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français in 1891 and 1894. His landscapes of the Mediterranean with cheerful tones at regional exhibitions were awarded by the jury and highly appreciated by collectors.
The artist produced views of small Mediterranean ports: Martigues, Cassis, Les Lecques, Bandol ..
His son Henry Malfroy, also a painter, would take over his studio in Martigues.
Nb: Old minor restorations, without impact, are visible on the back.
Dimensions: 40.5 x 65 cm without frame and 52 x 77.5 cm with its wooden frame.
