Extraordinary and large traditional Balinese painting named Palintangan (or Palelintangan), depicting the Balinese astrological and divinatory calendar based on the Pawukon cycle.
Made entirely by hand on cotton canvas according to the classic Wayang painting style of Kamasan (Klungkung, Bali), the work is divided into a grid of 49 squares (7x7). Each square is topped by detailed inscriptions in the ancient Balinese/Kawi script and illustrates deities (Dewo), celestial spirits, demons (Kasar) and mythological beings that determined auspicious days and character traits in the island's traditional culture.
Origin: Bali, Indonesia
Artistic school: Kamasan (Klungkung)
Epoch: Second half of the 20th Century (approximately 1960–1980)
Technique: Ink and tempera on cotton canvas
Dimensions (canvas only): 87 x 87 cm approx (excluding frame)
Dimensions (with frame): 107 x 104 cm
Conditions: Very good, vivid colors and well preserved, stretched surface. Present are slight and natural signs of aging and nuances typical of artisanal pigments that attest to its authenticity. Mounted in protective frame.
