KANEDA · NEO-TOKYO · 1988

Few visual worlds have influenced cyberpunk as profoundly as AKIRA.

This triptych reimagines Kaneda and Neo-Tokyo through three dense monochrome compositions combining the iconic motorcycle, monumental architecture, apocalyptic imagery and the visual overload of a futuristic metropolis on the verge of collapse.

Æ2381 filters this universe through the aesthetics of Japanese underground print culture, experimental manga and late-1980s science-fiction publications. Halftones, cross-hatching, distressed inks, xerox-like textures and oversized Japanese typography give the works the appearance of artifacts recovered from a forgotten Neo-Tokyo archive.

Kaneda’s motorcycle becomes simultaneously machine, design object and symbol of rebellion, surrounded by the defining language of cyberpunk: megacities, youth culture, technological acceleration, destruction and uncertain futures.

Produced in only 4 unique variations, the triptych is conceived as a collector’s tribute to one of the defining works of Japanese manga, animation and science-fiction culture.
