JIJI · MIDNIGHT TALES OF JAPAN

This triptych transports Jiji into an imaginary Japan of moonlit nights, masks, flowers, spirits and dreams, combining the charm of the familiar black cat with the mysterious atmosphere of Japanese folklore.

The first composition pairs Jiji with a kitsune-style fox mask and blossoms. The central work places him beneath a full moon and above a dramatic traditional guardian mask, surrounded by flowers, butterflies and ornamental forms. In the final artwork, Jiji emerges from a decorated bowl in a quieter, more playful nocturnal scene.

Æ2381 reinterprets these elements through the aesthetics of vintage Japanese manga, folklore illustration and underground print culture. Halftones, cross-hatching, distressed blacks and Japanese typography give the works the character of forgotten pages from an imaginary vintage publication.

Across the three compositions, the black cat becomes a guide between the everyday world and an imagined spirit realm, creating a nostalgic tribute to Japanese animation, folklore and the enduring symbolism of the black cat.
